Rhinoplasty A-Z

Rhinoplasty A-Z

MS. ANGELIQUE FRAME: If you’re thinking about rhinoplasty the first thing you should do is choose a qualified, board certified surgeon who specializes in rhinoplasty. Make sure you set up an initial consultation with your doctor of choice and ask a lot of questions. This is the perfect opportunity to ask about everything, from the plastic surgeon’s qualifications to financing and scheduling options.

DR. JACK P. GUNTER: I would want to know how many rhinoplasties that doctor does a year, how long he’s been doing them, and how much experience that he has.

MS. ANGELIQUE FRAME: Dr. Jack Gunter and Dr. Spencer Cochran of the world renowned Gunter Center for Aesthetics and Cosmetic Surgery in Dallas Fort Worth, Texas are widely regarded as two of the premier rhinoplasty specialists in the industry. They say those looking to improve the appearance of such a prominent part of their face should make sure their place surgeon is experienced in the field of rhinoplasty, not just general plastic surgery.

DR. JACK P. GUNTER: There’s a lot of good doctors that do good plastic surgery but don’t especially do good rhinoplasty.

MS. ANGELIQUE FRAME: Another way to check out a doctor’s qualifications is to ask some of their other patients how their experience went. While you’re at it, it’s a good idea to see if the doctor can provide sketches or computer images that will show you what your new nose may look like. After all, this is surgery on what is often the focal point of your face.

DR. JACK P. GUNTER: The nose being the most prominent part of the face is very important, of course, in facial aesthetics.

MS. ANGELIQUE FRAME: Dr. Gunter and Dr. Spencer Cochran are two of only a handful of surgeons worldwide that focus exclusively on rhinoplasty and procedures, such as chin implants that can enhance the result of rhinoplasty. Dr. Cochran says there are certain criteria that patients have to meet before the procedure is done.

DR. SPENCER COCHRAN: When patients come to our office for consultation we carefully assess each patient to make sure that they’re emotionally and physically prepared to undergo this surgical procedure. Equally important is also the patient’s expectations in terms of what surgery can and cannot accomplish to improve that.

MS. ANGELIQUE FRAME: When considering rhinoplasty it’s important to know that there are many different types of procedures that qualified plastic surgeons can perform. Dr. Gunter explains.

DR. JACK P. GUNTER: There’s no one rhinoplasty that fits all noses. If you look at noses there’s no one nose that is identical to another nose. They are all different. And we feel that each rhinoplasty must be individualized, taken into race, gender, even the patient’s physical characteristics of their face.

DR. SPENCER COCHRAN: Primary rhinoplasty refers to first time nasal surgery, whether it be for cosmetic or functional reasons. This is accomplished by removing excess bone and cartilage from beneath the skin. After the newly shaped framework is completed the skin is re-draped to give the nose its new appearance.

MS. ANGELIQUE FRAME: Secondary rhinoplasty is a procedure that is performed after a patient has had one or more previous rhinoplasties, but may not have worked out as well as they had hoped. If you fall into that category take Dr. Gunter’s suggestion seriously.

DR. JACK P. GUNTER: Because of its difficulty it’s very important that the patient select a highly qualified surgeon to perform any type of secondary rhinoplasty.

MS. ANGELIQUE FRAME: So what’s the immediate impact of a rhinoplasty that is done correctly?

DR. JACK P. GUNTER: Rhinoplasty has actually two benefits, improving facial aesthetics and also improving nasal function. The nose has a very strong psychological effect on one’s self-image and can decrease one’s self-confidence, especially in the younger patients.

MS. ANGELIQUE FRAME: Thousands of people have benefited from rhinoplasties performed world wide. Elly Khoyi is among them. For as long as she can remember she had a complex about her looks, that was to her, at least, as clear as the nose on her face.

MS. Elly Khoyi: I wasn’t really teased about it or anything, but I just thought that it would just complete me. It was something I was self-conscious about and I wanted to get done. I came in knowing that I had to be realistic about my results and that Dr. Gunter was going to give me the best that he could for my face. People I haven’t seen in like five years I’ve seen they say it looks so natural and you just, there’s something about you that just looks radiant. They couldn’t put their finger on it, but it looks great.

DR. SPENCER COCHRAN: Our rhinoplasties are usually performed under general anesthesia, which means patients are asleep. Typically the surgery lasts approximately three hours. The surgery may last up to five hours for patients who undergo a secondary rhinoplasty. For patients who have a rib graft we often keep them in the hospital overnight, but generally rhinoplasty is considered an outpatient procedure.

ANGELIQUE FRAME: Once you’re out of surgery you can expect to have some swelling and mild bruising. A cast will be placed on the outside of the nose that is removed a week later. Even with the swelling and bruising the improvement is typically visible even at one week. Watch Elly’s tears as she is thrilled with the positive changes in her nose at her cast removal.

MS. Elly Khoyi: I had little to no pain. It was really shocking.

MS. ANGELIQUE FRAME: Patients should expect that a life changing surgery like rhinoplasty may take some time before the final results are truly felt. There are times when it could take up to a year for all of the swelling to go down and the nose to be completely healed. But for most the results are usually worth the wait.

DR. JACK P. GUNTER: It’s very satisfying for us to see a patient come in to the office with a big smile on their face and very outgoing, who, before their rhinoplasty was very shy and retiring and you know, didn’t have much to say, but has become a much happier person. And this makes us very, it is very satisfying to us.

MS. Elly Khoyi: I am so glad that I went ahead and chose to go ahead with the rhinoplasty procedure. I feel like it’s brought out my other features that I have and you can see more of me. And I’m just thrilled.
